2 Dubuque Men Charged in Meth Lab Fire

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — Prosecutors in Iowa say two Dubuque men suspected of running a meth lab that caused a fire at an apartment building face multiple federal criminal charges.

A federal indictment unsealed Tuesday says 46-year-old John Starks Sr. and 24-year-old Casey Duhme attempted to make methamphetamine in an apartment building on Feb. 20. The apartment is within 1,000 feet of Prescott Elementary School in Dubuque, which increases the possible penalties against both men.

Prosecutors say the men’s actions resulted in a fire at the apartment building that caused significant damage, rendering the building uninhabitable. No one was injured.

Trial for both men is set to begin July 14. If convicted, Starks faces up to 120 years in prison, and Duhme faces up to 80 years.
