DAVENPORT, Iowa (AP) A prosecutor says an Iowa man killed his pregnant wife so that he could be with another woman that he'd pursued for months.
Prosecutor Andrew Prosser told jurors Wednesday that text messages between Seth Techel and Rachel McFarland "read like a countdown to Lisa Techel's death." He says the messages in which Techel promises to end his marriage days before the slaying were "astounding."
Prosser is delivering a closing argument urging jurors to convict Techel of first-degree murder and nonconsensual termination of a human pregnancy. Two prior trials have ended in hung juries.
Techel's accused of shooting 23-year-old Lisa Techel while she slept in their southeastern Iowa trailer May 26, 2012.
Prosser says Techel couldn't divorce her because his father-in-law was helping him land his "dream job" in law enforcement.
