Professors Group Ends Probe Of Program Cuts At University Of Northern Iowa

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa (AP) — A national professors group has closed its investigation of 2012 program cuts at the University of Northern Iowa.

The Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier says the American Association of University Professors announced Monday that it was closing its investigation. Joe Gorton is United Faculty president and president of the AAUP chapter. He says cooperation between the administration and the faculty had led to “significant progress in restoring respect for academic freedom, tenure and faculty governance” at UNI.

The AAUP last June opted to wait before deciding whether to formally censure UNI over its 2012 decision to terminate dozens of majors, minors and graduate programs. The university said the programs had low enrollment and needed to be cut to save money. Critics said the decisions were made without proper faculty consultation.
