LINN COUNTY, Iowa - An overnight power outage impacted three Linn County communities for more than an hour on Saturday morning. Alliant Energy’s Power Outage Summary showed about 9,000 people in the county were without power from 12:30 A.M. until about 2:00 A.M.

The outage impacted a large portion of Southeast Cedar Rapids as well as Ely and Bertram. A spokesman for Alliant says the outage originated at the Prairie Creek Subsation in Cedar Rapids.

Saturday afternoon he told KCRG-TV9 workers have been unable to determine what caused the outage.

Several people reported hearing some loud noises when the power first went out.

Alliant said in addition to generating electricity, the nearby power plant also uses it, and lost power when the substation went down.

A spokesman said that caused steam to be automatically released, creating the noise.
