PLATTEVILLE, Wisconsin — The National Weather Service confirms 2 tornadoes hit Platteville, Wisconsin Monday night, injuring 5 people and destroying several buildings.
The NWS says one tornado hit the University of Wisconsin-Platteville, measuring an EF-2 with winds of 120 mph. It was on the ground for 2 miles. The second tornado measured as an EF-1, with winds of 105 mph. It lasted just a half mile on the ground near the Platteville Golf and Country Club.
The tornadoes hit overnight, destroying at least a dozen homes and businesses and damaged another 20 structures. The UW-Platteville campus is closed Tuesday because of the damage, including extensive damage at the football stadium.
Along Highway 151, the damage is very visible where the first tornado ended. A Shell gas station lost its roof in the storm and the awning collapsed.
A lot of traffic is coming through town as people want to see the damage but authorities are asking any sightseers to stay away for now as crews try to clean up the damage.
