Possible drowning investigated in southeast Iowa

By Associated Press

SPERRY, Iowa — Southeast Iowa authorities are investigating the death of a 69-year-old man who was found unresponsive in a pond.

The Des Moines County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were dispatched Monday night to a residence on 180th Street in Sperry. Sheriff Mike Johnstone told The Hawk Eye that the man was taken to Great River Medical Center in West Burlington, where he was pronounced dead.

Johnstone says there is no indication that a crime was involved in the man’s death and that, so far, it appears to be a drowning. An autopsy has been scheduled.

Johnstone won’t release the man’s name until the man’s relatives are notified about his death.
