One Person Drowned in Upper Iowa River in Decorah

DECORAH, Iowa — The Decorah Police Department responded to a 911 call from a woman reporting her friend, 25-year-old Matthew Lundt went under the water in the Upper Iowa River and did not resurface around 8:12 p.m. Wednesday. Police arrived at the river and reported seeing a Lundt’s body just under the surface of the river about 500 yards downstream of the College Drive bridge. However, crews quickly lost sight of him in the river.

Emergency officials set up several lines of personnel in the river between the College Drive Bridge and the Fifth Street bridge. At 10:35 p.m. crews with the fire department pulled Lundt’s body from the river near Dunning Springs. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Decorah Fire and Police Departments were assisted by emergency officials from 11 different departments, including the Winneshiek County Sheriff’s Office, the Calmar Fire Department, the Calmar Police Department, the Allamakee County Sheriff’s Office, the Iowa DNR and the Iowa State Patrol.
