Non-profit Gives Big Bean Harvest to Linn County Hungry

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A non-profit who feeds the hungry had a big bean harvest this week.

Feed Iowa First in Cedar Rapids said they harvested more than 2000 pounds of green beans from some of their 25 acres of produce, Tuesday.

Some will be taken to local food banks. Half went to Horizons Meals on Wheels, Wednesday.

One thousand pounds may seem like a lot, but officials estimated it would only last Horizons a week.

Feed Iowa First’s creator said she hopes to produce more in the future.

“Not satisfied, no way. I’m not going to stop until either I’m done, dead, or this is finished,” said Sonia Kendrick, Feed Iowa First creator.

Last month, someone stole a tractor from Feed Iowa First. The group needs it to do a lot, like harvest fresh vegetables.

The crisis was averted after someone anonymously donated money to pay for a new tractor.
