LINN COUNTY, Iowa — The Linn County Sheriff’s Office says a motorcycle driver was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries following a crash Thursday evening.

Deputies say 58-year-old John Hicks of Shellsburg was traveling eastbound on Blairs Ferry Road when he rear ended a van that was stopped waiting to turn onto Deer Ridge Drive. When officials arrived around 5:15 p.m. they found Hicks who had been thrown from his motorcycle. The driver of the van, 21-year-old Ashley Geels of Cedar Rapids was not hurt in the collision. Hicks was transported to Saint Lukes Hospital and then flown to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics.

Geels was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, and Hicks was wearing a helmet. The crash remains under investigation by the Linn County Sheriff’s Office.
