DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) — Iowa Secretary of State Matt Schultz is sending a letter to county election officials suggesting they remove more than 1,200 Iowa voters who may be dead.
Shultz says he did a routine check of the Social Security Death Index and cross referenced it with voter rolls matching name, birth month and year of listed voters.
He advises the county officials to analyze the list carefully and notify him of those they remove from voter rolls.
He plans to send out notices so any voter whose death has been prematurely recorded will have a chance to protest and get restored back to voting status.
Schultz found 1,234 voters listed as deceased.
The most, 103, are in Linn County. Wright County has 100.
