Middle School Students Learn the Meaning of Entrepreneurship Through Lemonade Stand

IOWA CITY, Iowa - More than 30 students from a summer camp sold drinks to people along the Iowa City Ped Mall.

It was part of the University of Iowa’s Jacobson Institute lemonade stand business project.

Thirty-five middle school students formed groups and set up these stands in downtown Iowa City to learn about what it means to run a business and start thinking about future careers.

“It’s fun to be out here and ask people if they like lemonade or if they want any lemonade,” Noah Bullwinkle, a 7th grade camper, said.

For this project, kids like Noah Bullwinkle put their minds to work.

“We thought maybe it’d be a good idea to sell some other drinks and if people wanted a variety of them, they could have it,” Bullwinkle said.

With 10 dollars as starting money, they bought gatorade, water and juice to sell to others.

They’re hoping to make a profit, something they want to do in the future even if they don’t know what kind of business they’ll run yet.

“I’m not really quite sure [what job I want], but something that makes a lot of money,” Sean Hamilton, a 9th grade camper, said.

The money they make will go to other organizations such as an animal shelter. Running these lemonade stands is also teaching them how to bounce back if something doesn’t go as planned.

“A lot of positive feedback in saying keep up the good work even if they don’t purchase and all the kids are keeping great attitudes,” Jeremy Fahler, teacher assistant, said.

These kids say they’re getting good life experiences by taking on this responsibility.

“And this is a real life experience that we might have to do someday about going out selling products on the street,” Hamilton said.
