Memorial to Cedar Rapids Police, Firefighters Dedicated After Move

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - Police Chief Wayne Jerman was among those who attended the dedication of Bret Sunner Memorial Park and the Police Officers and Firefighters Monument Thursday. The park and monument now sit at 8th Avenue and Valor Way SW, but used to sit between the police station and 3rd Avenue bridge until the flood of 2008.

The names of thirteen police officers and firefighters who died in the line of duty are currently engraved on the monument.

“We’re very glad that it’s finished, dedicated and in place...I hope and pray that no other names are added to it,” Jerman said.

Thursday’s dedication coincided with National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day.
