MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa — A jury in Marshalltown has started deliberations in a first-degree murder trial. 40-year-old Mathew Irving is accused of killing a woman last year.

The Marshalltown Times-Republican reports Irving Friday testified he didn’t intentionally killed 55-year-old Rebecca Hall.

Marshall County Sheriff’s deputies found her body in the back of a minivan parked on the side of a road just east of Marshalltown in July of 2013.

Irving testified he’d sought out Hall in hopes of using meth and having sex with her. He says Hall attacked him and in defending himself, he accidentally killed her.

A medical examiner testified Thursday she died after being smothered.
