Lawsuit Says Iowa Nursing Home Mistreated Woman

MADRID, Iowa (AP) — The family of an elderly Iowa woman who died this week is suing the nursing home where she lived, saying it left the woman naked and soiled on the floor of an unfurnished room.

The Des Moines Register reports that Kris Gerhard, the daughter of 74-year-old Rochelle Gerhard, filed the lawsuit Friday against Madrid Home for the Aging.

The lawsuit says the daughter found her mother on Aug. 2 on a mat-covered floor at the home, screaming, “I am not a dog!”

The lawsuit says the woman was admitted to a hospital that day with signs of dehydration and malnutrition. She died on Monday.

A public report from a state inspection of the home is expected next week. The home’s administrator declined to comment to the newspaper.
