IOWA CITY, Iowa — Five University of Iowa students who buy 2014 season football tickets will win free tuition for a year, the University’s athletic department announced Tuesday morning.

The tuition, estimated at around $8,000, based on current in-state rates, will be awarded for the 2014 fall and 2015 spring semester classes.

The deadline for students to purchase season tickets is Friday. The announcement comes just days after Athletic Director Gary Barta told reporters he planned to open unsold student tickets to the general public after the deadline to purchase passes.

A news release from the University’s athletic department says students were notified of the promotion on Monday.

Other prizes for students who don’t win tuition include gift cards to Hy-Vee, $500 in free books and an away game viewing party.
