Linn County Officials Seek AMBER Alert Suspect for Walker Death Information
By Lee Hermiston, The Gazette
Authorities have arrested and charged Shaun Hogan in the death of Crystal Gaffney, who was identified as the woman whose body was found near Walker. The amber alert associated with this case is no longer in effect.
UPDATE (10:30 a.m.):
WATERLOO, Iowa -- The Linn County Sheriff's Office said they want to talk to Shaun Hogan about the woman's body found near Walker on Wednesday morning.
Hogan, 35, is also wanted in connection with the abduction of three girls Wednesday afternoon. Those girls were later found in Waterloo. Hogan remains at large and is considered dangerous, authorities have said.
PREVIOUS (2:38 a.m.): BLACK HAWK COUNTY, Iowa — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation confirms the dead woman found in Walker is the mother of the three children involved in the AMBER alert. Law enforcement officers are still searching for Shaun Hogan.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety canceled an Amber Alert for three girls, 6-year-old Mia Elaine Gaffney, 8-year-old Brooklyn Anne-Marie Gaffney and 8-month-old Nevaeh Hogan that it issued earlier Wednesday night. The Iowa State Patrol confirmed the girls were found safe, and a Waterloo police officer said the girls were found in Waterloo but would not give specifics. A post to the Facebook page maintained by the Buchanan County Sheriff's Office says the suspect listed in the original alert remains at large and should be considered dangerous.
Authorities suspect 36-year-old Shaun Hogan of taking the girls in a red, four-door Pontiac Grand Am with the Iowa license plate 832 YPC. He's described as 6'3” tall and 250 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. An alert from the National Weather Service says the abduction happened at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
At 10:17 p.m., the state warning system issued an email containing descriptions of the girls. It said Elaine is 4'0” tall and 80 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes and Brooklyn is 4'4” tall, also 80 pounds, with brown hair and eyes. It did not list a physical description of Nevaeh Hogan. That alert was canceled about an hour later, at 11:18 p.m.
Waterloo Police say the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is handling the case. Authorities said the DCI was investigating the case that led to the Amber Alert and the death of an unidentified woman found in Walker early Wednesday morning. Anyone with information about Shaun Hogan is asked to call Alex Murphy with DPS at 515-443-3014 or local law enforcement.
