Hiawatha Fire Department Competing for Best Volunteer Department
By Katie Stinson, KCRG-TV9
HIAWATHA, Iowa - Our Town’s volunteer fire department is being recognized as one of the best, and the department is hoping to take home some big prizes because of it.
The Hiawatha Fire Department is a finalist in the Johnsonville’s Sausage Best of Us contest. The meat company is asking for help identifying the best volunteer fire departments in the nation. Out of 256 nominations, The Hiawatha Fire Department made it to the top 20 finalists. Firefighters say they think they’ll win because their service stretches far beyond emergency calls.
We have a great public education program which is heavily supported by my volunteers. We go into the schools and visit the kids, we are actually in the schools five or six times a year we hit all the pre-schools we try to go out in the community on the weekend and do stuff we’re always giving tours, Hiawatha Fire Chief Mike Nesslage said.
If Hiawatha wins it will take home $10,000, training packages and a whole-lot-of brats. Voting is underway and will go through June 20th ...the last day of Our Town.
