Oelwein appoints new mayor to replace Manus, special election possible

By Max Walker, KCRG-TV9

OELWEIN — The city council voted Thursday night to appoint Mayor Pro Tem Peggy Sherrets as acting mayor.

She takes over after the council accepted the resignation of Jason Manus on Monday.

Manus turned in his letter of resignation last week following accusations he sexually abused a nine-year-old and a 14-year-old in 2010.

He was arrested at his home on August 11 and he has pleaded not guilty to five counts of second degree sexual abuse.

Sherrets will remain in office unless a petition for a special election receives at least 157 valid signatures by September 8.
