Hearing on New Mitchell County Courthouse Set

OSAGE, Iowa (AP) A public hearing to discuss borrowing more than $8.7 million to build a new Mitchell County courthouse has been set for Tuesday.

The county supervisors are proposing to issue general obligation bonds for the project. The lowest bid for construction of a new courthouse was $6.5 million but supervisors say the remaining $2.2 million is to provide a cushion for anything unexpected and to pay costs already incurred. That includes demolition costs, architects fees, legal costs and other administrative fees.

County officials say the old courthouse, which was built in 1858, was falling apart. Supervisor Stan Walk said renovations would have run into the millions. The old building was demolished in February.
