Marshalltown OKs Purchase of Military Vehicle
MARSHALLTOWN, Iowa (AP) — Marshalltown officials have approved the purchase of a military vehicle for limited police use.
The City Council voted 4-3 Monday in support of buying a Caiman MTV Defensive Vehicle. Officials say the vehicle will be used only in critical and dangerous operations.
Marshalltown Police Chief Mike Tupper says he hopes officials will never have to use the vehicle.
The Marshalltown Times-Republican says (http://bit.ly/1lkcIRN ) the 47,000-pound vehicle is valued at $500,000. A military equipment surplus program will cover the vehicle's purchase for the city. Officials will still need to pay to transport it from Texas to Iowa, which could range from $3,500 to $5,000.
The vehicle seats 11 people. It is 24 feet long and 10 feet tall.
