Ft. Madison City Council Allows Division of Historic Site

FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — An Iowa city council has approved a motion that could bring a retail store to a site that was a battleground in the War of 1812.

The (Burlington) Hawk Eye reports that the Fort Madison City Council voted unanimously to approve the division of a parking lot. The decision could allow a Dollar General to be constructed on the historic site.

The city manager says a test archaeological study conducted in 2009 determined that the eastern side of the parking lot is more historically significant to the battle than the other side.

But members of the Standing Bear Council disagree. They say that the entire area is sacred ground and should be treated as such.
