Fire Damages Aplington Bus Barn

By Richard Pratt, Reporter

APLINGTON, Iowa — The bus barn in Aplington was damaged by fire Tuesday.

Aplington-Parkersburg superintendent Jon Thompson says the fire happened around noon Tuesday. He said firefighters were on the scene by the time he arrived at the bus barn, at 215 10th St. in Aplington.

Thompson says it appears that a lawn mower backfired, igniting something in the barn, and the fire quickly spread. The area that caught on fire housed a tractor along with several lawn mowers and snowblowers.

None of the buses in the barn were damaged, and the building is separate from the middle school in Aplington, so students were never at risk, Thompson said.

Insurance adjusters estimated the damage at around $100,000. The custodian using the lawn mower suffered minor burns to one of his hands.
