Fire Blocks Early Morning Traffic, Cuts Power in Cedar Rapids

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Cedar Rapids firefighters spent several hours battling flames at an Alliant Energy substation early Friday morning. The fire knocked out power to a few hundred people and shut down the intersection for a couple hours.

Fire crews arrived at the scene near the corner of Edgewood Road and 42nd Street NE around 2:20 a.m. but it’s still unclear exactly when the fire began.

Fire officials told KCRG-TV9 they had to wait for a representative from Alliant to arrive before they could begin attacking the fire. A spokesman for Alliant says that representative was on scene within 15 minutes of the call and had to cut the roughly 69 thousand volts of electricity before it was safe for fire crews to enter the station.

About 1900 Alliant customers lost power during the fire but Alliant says all those customers had power restored within an hour or two.

The fire is still under investigation.
