FAA Investigates Fatal Wayne Co. Plane Crash

WAYNE COUNTY, Iowa — The Federal Aviation Administration is investigating a fatal plane crash that happened Saturday afternoon.

KCCI-TV reported the crash occurred at 1:50 p.m. in Wayne County, just five miles southwest of Russell.

The Iowa State Patrol said the crash killed two people. Witnesses said they heard the plane sputtering before it went down in a hay field.

Debris was reported in and around a grain bin at a towing company in Chariton.

Neighbor Tom Fleming described how his father-in-law heard the crash.

“He said all the sudden, the engine kind of caught and he heard it speed up, and then it just died. He heard the thud, so to speak,” Fleming said.

Authorities said they were still looking into what caused the RV-7A to crash.
