DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — No one was injured after a homeowner using a small excavator tore open a residential natural gas line in Dubuque.
The accident and resulting gas leak occurred around 10 a.m. Saturday.
Police and firefighters responded to the leak to evacuate nearby homes, but no one was found at home at the surrounding houses.
Officials say the gas leak was contained within an hour.
The homeowner who hit the line said he and some friends were removing a retaining wall at the time. The man says he located and marked underground utility lines running to the property before digging, but that the gas line was in a spot it shouldn’t have been.
