DUBUQUE, Iowa — Police in Dubuque are warning residents of a scammer posing as a debt collector with Alliant Energy.
Police say the scammer is calling people claiming they have an outstanding bill with Alliant Energy and threatens to cut off service unless the person pays immediately.
In cases like this, police say it is often impossible to track down the scammer or get money back for victims.
Alliant Energy says it only threatens to shut off utilities after several attempts to negotiate a payment with a delinquent customer and never threatens to shut off power within an hour of the first communication. Alliant says if you get a scam call like this, hang up and contact Alliant Energy and police immediately.
