DUBUQUE, Iowa — The Grant County, Wisconsin Sheriff’s Office has identified the man who drowned in the Mississippi River north of Dubuque Friday.

The Sheriff’s Office said 53-year-old Jerry S. Thill of Dubuque had been camping on an island on the Wisconsin side of the river across from Finley’s Landing Park with four other men from Dubuque.

Around 4:30 Friday afternoon, Thill went into the river to check why the fishing was so bad. Thill was in water up to his chest when he suddenly became distressed, and tried, but couldn’t swim.

A 23-year-old man went in to help Thill, but was not able to keep a strong hold on him. Thill went under water and did not resurface.

Four boats searched the river and crews recovered his body about an hour later.

The Grant County Coroner’s Office pronounced Thill dead when he was brought to shore in Potosi, Wisconsin.

Several agencies assisted in the search and recovery effort.
