DES MOINES, Iowa — Five firefighters in Des Moines were injured after a call to a major downtown fire Saturday morning. Their injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.

Fire crews arrived shortly after midnight at the Equitable Building — a 19-story building at 6th & Locust.

The Fire Chief said falling debris hurt 2 firefighters, 1 fell off a ladder and two others had heat-related issues.

Investigators say the fire was contained to a crawl space on the second floor, where most of the damage occurred. Upper floors also took on smoke damage.

The building completed in 1924 was the tallest building in Iowa for 49 years until 1973. It has been undergoing renovation work.
