DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) - A Des Moines dentist whose staff reported that she reused gloves on patients has agreed to pay a $2,500 fine.
The Des Moines Register says (http://dmreg.co/1rRO7cx ) documents show Dr. Rebecca Westra recently agreed to pay the fine to settle administrative charges filed by the Iowa Dental Board. The board said her staff complained to the state in 2012 about “poor infection-control protocols.”
The board’s allegations say Westra would wash and reuse gloves and would reuse disposable chair covers. Inspectors also say she failed to keep records of staff vaccinations and didn’t properly store dental instruments.
Westra’s lawyer, Kevin Driscoll, says Westra disputes the allegations but also says she decided to settle the matter so “she could continue to devote her time and attention to the care of her patients.”
