IOWA CITY, Iowa A truck full of dead pigs is leaving a big stench in a portion of one Iowa City neighborhood.
As of 1 p.m. Friday, the truck of pigs has been parked at the intersection of Highway 1 and Sunset Street for 19 hours.
The dead pig carcasses were strewn about the roadway Thursday evening after the truck driver said he hit the brakes at a stoplight and the pigs went flying. The semi driver described it as raining pigs.
The pigs have been put back in the truck, but they need to be loaded into a second truck before continuing their commute to a rendering facility in Clinton.
Residents living in the neighborhood just to the north say the smell is irritating them. Some passing drivers are slowing down to take pictures or look at the truck, which has dead pigs piled to the top.
It’s not clear how much longer the pigs will remain at the intersection. An Iowa City community service officer has been called in to monitor traffic, although all lanes remain open.
The driver was cited by police for spilling on the highway.
