Czech Village Celebrates Houby Days

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa - It’s a May tradition in Cedar Rapids -- Houby Days in the Czech Village. Houby is the Czech word for mushroom.

Hunting for morels is a popular family tradition for many. To celebrate this cornerstone of culture, visitors enjoy good food, rides, and live music all weekend.

It’s also an ideal time to learn a little more on Czech heritage.

“We come from such diverse backgrounds, but we’ve managed to sort of all meld together, and that’s great, except it’s those little things that make us special, it gives us a little extra identity,” said Pam Lewis, the Czech Village Association president.

Lewis also said she sold out of mushrooms early Saturday morning. But hunters are out looking for more before Sunday’s festivities.

This is the 37th year the Czech Village Association has hosted the event.
