Interstate 380 crash injures two

SWISHER, Iowa — A two-vehicle crash sent two the hospital and shut down portions of Interstate 380 Tuesday morning.

According to an Iowa State Patrol minimal crash report, 67-year-old Gilbert C. Pewe, Jr., of New Liberty, was taken to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics via Aircare after the crash. His condition is unknown. A second driver, 48-year-old Chris R. Troendle was injured in the crash, but was not transported, according to the state patrol.

The crash happened at 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes of Interstate 380 at the 8.45 mile marker, just north of the Iowa River. The state patrol said Troendle, driving a 2007 Chevy Impala was southbound in the right lane and slowed down due to slower moving traffic ahead. At that same time, Pewe — driving a semi and trailer — was southbound and attempted to merge, struck the rear of Troendle’s Impala and veered right.

Pewe’s semi rolled and came to rest in the median, according to the state patrol.

Southbound traffic was shut down while emergency personnel responded to the crash and commuters were rerouted onto Highway 965 at the Swisher/Shueyville exit. Northbound traffic was reduced to one lane, as well. All lanes reopened by 10 a.m.

The crash remains under investigation.
