CORAVILLE — At least two people were taken to the hospital after an apartment fire in Coralville early Friday morning.

Police and Fire crews were first dispatched to 725 20th Avenue after someone reported seeing flames and smoke inside the building.

Heavy smoke trapped several residents inside, according to third floor resident Michael Limam. Limam and his wife were rescued by fire crews and brought down a ladder to safety.

Paramedics on scene were still treating victims for respiratory issues outside the building as of 2 o’clock. The victims taken to the hospital were suffering apparent smoke inhalation, according to police.

Police say the cause of the fire remains under investigation and more people may need to be transported to the hospital.

The building is made up of 12 units. It’s not clear how many people may be periodically without a home, police said.
