CORALVILLE, Iowa — A Coralville police officer is recovering at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after a crash on Interstate 80 Thursday morning.
Police Chief Barry Bedford says the officer was investigating two crashes, the first of which happened at 8:32 a.m. near the Coral Ridge Mall exit. Bedford says one lane of the interstate was blocked off, which the driver of a semi didn’t see. The semi hit the driver side door of the officer’s squad car while he was inside about an hour later.
First responders had to remove the door to get the police officer out. Bedford says officer Jeffery Barkhoff suffered minor injuries and was talking and in good spirits hours after the crash, but his car was totaled.
The Iowa State Patrol will handle the investigation of the crash.
This is the second time in six months a Coralville police officer has been injured in a crash near the exit for Highway 965. On December 8, a semi hit a patch of ice on the interstate and lost control. Officer Michael Wright was getting into his car after checking on some crashes when the semi hit. He suffered a cut above his eye and some bruising.
