Charles City Considers Generating Power at Dam

CHARLES CITY, Iowa (AP) — A company is expressing interest in generating electricity from the Main Street Dam in Charles City.

The Charles City Press reports a representative of A-One Geothermal Inc. spoke Monday at a City Council meeting and outlined plans for the dam.

Dale McNair says the Earlham-based company has been looking for sites where energy wheels could be installed, and the small Main Street Dam on the Cedar River could be a good location.

The city, Army Corps of Engineers and Iowa Department of Natural Resources would need to sign off on the project.

City Clerk Trudy O’Donnell says power generated by the dam would go to the power grid, and the city would receive a credit from MidAmerican Energy.

The proposal will return to the council before any decisions are made.
