Hundreds of sixth grade students from the Cedar Rapids area are taking field trips to learn about the environment and sustainability at Mt. Trashmore.
Tuesday two classes had the chance to visit the Linn County Solid Waste Agency. While there, students learn about composting, the science of recycling, and get to see the city from the top of the former landfill people call “Mount Trashmore.” Five decades of trash now lies under that hill. Students call the experience eye-opening.
“In the future, if you keep throwing away stuff that could be recycled, it’s going to take up your land and it’s just going to be full of trash,” said Abby Feldmann, a Harding Middle School Student.
This is an annual tour for sixth graders in the Cedar Rapids School District, with two more classes making a visit Thursday.
