Cedar Rapids Looking for Elite Recyclers

By Forrest Saunders, KCRG-TV9

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — City officials want you to become an “Elite Recycler”.

For a second time, the Cedar Rapids is taking applications for the Elite Recycler Program.

Participants learn how and why the city recycles as it does, plus they’ll get a chance to go on a behind-the-scenes tour of recycling facilities.

The program is one of a number designed to up city recycling stats. Megan Murphy, with the Cedar Rapids Solid Waste & Recycling Division, said residents currently recycle about 31% of their waste. She said the city hopes creating more Elite Recyclers will help get that number up seven percent by 2020.

“[Elite Recyclers] really understand how recycling works. Then we give them a designation on their “CURBY” cart so that they can tell the neighborhood, ‘Hey, I’m someone you can come to with questions’,” said Murphy.

The program will take up one afternoon a week, for four weeks in July. You can sign up by heading to this website.
