Cedar Rapids Firefighters Bike to RAGBRAI

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A group of Cedar Rapids firefighters are going the extra mile to make it to RAGBRAI.

Nine members of “Team Smoke Eaters” took off from Cedar Rapids on bicycles early this morning to start their 300-mile trek in advance of the 418 mile journey across the state.

They plan to join RAGBRAI in Okoboji, missing out on dipping their tire in the Missouri River and the 69-mile first day from Rock Valley to Okoboji.

One member of the team, Jason Williamson, said the group looks forward to the ride all year long.

“You get a completely different experience than RAGBRAI,” he said.

The Smoke Eaters don’t have an exact route planned, but they say it’s all part of the adventure.

Once they do make it to the RAGBRAI route, they’ll stay at fire stations along the way.

RAGBRAI officially leaves the starting line in Rock Valley on Sunday.
