MUSCATINE, Iowa (AP) — The organ music has faded at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Muscatine, which has finally closed its doors to parishioners.
The Muscatine Journal says safety concerns about the strength of the church building’s floor led to the decision to close the church and consolidate the parish with St. Mathias Catholic Church.
Officials say pains will be taken to preserve what they can during demolition. Most of the sacred relics already have been removed. Some of them were carried by parishioners during a procession after Saturday’s last service. About 100 people went from St. Mary’s to St. Mathias, reciting the rosary as they walked.
