BETTENDORF (AP) — Demolition crews have started tearing down a building in an eastern Iowa city to clear the way for a new Interstate 74 bridge.
The Quad-City Times reports workers are destroying the former Big 10 Mart gas station in downtown Bettendorf. The building’s removal will also allow two streets to be realigned in Bettendorf.
The gas station is the 37th structure to be knocked down as part of the I-74 project. When the work is finished, 42 buildings will have been destroyed to open a path for the new bridge, interchanges and street realignment.
The project’s manager with the Iowa Department of Transportation says the company hired to do the razing has 20 days to finish the work.
