Made in Eastern Iowa: Vinaporte

Many of you may like to kick back in a lawn chair at a backdoor barbecue or outdoor music event ... And perhaps sip some “adult” grape juice.

“It's always an adventure to find a new great wine, but it always tastes better coming out of a real wine glass,” said Chuck Kroemer of Marion. But while most of the chairs have a spot for cans and bottles, nothing was designed for wine glasses.

“I wanted this outside,” Kroemer said, gesturing to a glass of wine. “When I'm camping, when I'm tailgating, just sitting out on the deck,” he said.

“I sat in the chair in the back yard, had my wine glass, and didn't have a place to set it down. “

Kroemer is an avid wine drinker, and realized to drink wine out of an actual glass and avoid spills, he needed to create a product to literally fill the void.

Thus, the Vinaporte was born.

“I really just went to my garage, pulled out a piece of wood and started making something,” he said.

It's designed to fit in a variety of lawn chairs. He worked with several engineering firms in the area to develop additional prototypes.

“The weight's in the back end to counter balance the weight of your glass,” said Kroemer.

“It's not that expensive.. It's like a bottle of wine... Except it lasts you a whole lot longer,” he said. Now the Vinaport is selling online, as well as at local wine retailers like the First Avenue Wine House in Cedar Rapids, and Ramsey's Metro Market in Marion. Now, the business is going national.

“California, Memphis, North Carolina, just all around the country trying to push it out now,” Kroemer said.

There's plenty of work ahead, but for now, Kroemer will relax and savor the wine, and the success of the Vinaporte.
