IOWA CITY, Iowa — Mortenson Construction and University of Iowa officials gave members of the music community and media a sneak peek inside what will become the new Hancher Auditorium Wednesday.
“It’s really progressing nicely,” said Chuck Swanson, executive director of Hancher.
Crews began preparing the worksite back in the winter of 2013. To date they’ve erected much of the theater structure, which includes 1,800 seats on three levels.
In the coming weeks, another massive crane will be added to the site as work progresses.
“It’s going to be a tremendous addition to this community,” said Rod Lehnertz, UI director of planning and construction.
Work is expected to be completed in mid-2016 with a grand opening scheduled for that fall. The entire project will cost roughly $175 million and is the largest of the flood recovery projects currently under construction at the University of Iowa.
