IOWA CITY, Iowa - The marijuana-themed restaurant the Cheba Hut has closed in Iowa City, according to the company’s Twitter account.
“Shout out to all who supported us and our great employees. It’s a sad week as we close our doors. Thanks, #Iowa City.” the restaurant tweeted late Wednesday afternoon, which included a link to a story by the local newspaper, the Press Citizen.
It was their first tweet since April 20th of this year.
Cheba Hut attracted local headlines after opening in 2011 with a ranch dressing chugging contest to celebrate April 20th. The date is often associated with marijuana smoking celebrations by cannabis supporters.
In recent years such celebrations at the Cheba Hut started losing popularity, and the original local franchise owners sold the business and moved away from Iowa.
A call to Cheba Hut went unanswered Wednesday afternoon.
