FORT MADISON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities have released the name of a Fort Madison police officer involved in a fatal shooting.

The state Division of Criminal Investigation said Wednesday that Officer Karl Judd remains on paid administrative leave following the Aug. 3 death of 27-year-old Ryan Swearingen.

Police say Swearingen confronted Judd with a knife as the officer responded to a call about an individual with a knife. Judd shot Swearingen, who later died.

An autopsy determined Swearingen died from multiple gunshots. The case remains under investigation.
