MOUNT VERNON, Iowa - Chalk artists took over the streets of Mount Vernon Saturday for the 9th annual Chalk the Walk festival.

About 80 artists used over a half ton of chalk to turn a square cement canvas into colorful artwork. A steady stream of people walked through to check out the sketches. But one first-time artist from the University of Iowa said there’s something she likes even more than the chance to get creative.

“My favorite part is all the community. It’s so great seeing all these people com through and you get a lot of support from everyone. Like I’ve been really surprised by everybody walking by and being like ‘good job,’ it’s been good,” Erika Ogden said.

The event is the first and largest festival of its kind in the state. It takes place each year during the first weekend of May. It will be happening again Sunday until 6:00 p.m.
