Don Bosco Rallies To Win State Championship
By Josh Christensen, Reporter
CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Don Bosco lost in the championship game last season, and was hoping for redemption Thursday. It was a tough first half for the Dons.
Exira quarterback Drew Peppers stiff-armed his way to a 40-yard touchdown run, and Don Bosco trailed 14-0 at halftime.
But they would get on board late in the third quarter with an unusual touchdown. Mitchell Corkery fumbled the ball while trying to break a few tackles, but the Dons recovered it downfield for a touchdown.
The Dons defense followed that up with a turnover on downs, and quarterback Jake Hogan scored on a three-yard touchdown run.
Still trailing 14-12, Don Bosco got the ball back with five minutes remaining. Hogan hit Travis Havel over the middle for a 33-yard gain, and a few plays later, scored again on a keeper.
Hogan sealed the championship with an interception on the ensuing possession.
