Girls Track: Kennedy's Estelle Returns To Form

By Jeff Linder, Reporter

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa -- Marisa Estelle has stopped growing and stopped hurting.

Knock on wood.

"I've got to be cautious now. I stretch a lot more," said the senior from Cedar Rapids Kennedy.

Once upon a time, Estelle was a state placewinner, earning fifth-place honors in the 100-meter hurdles as a freshman.

That was several inches and several injuries ago.

"My sophomore year, I hurt my hip flexor," she recalled. "Then I grew 4 inches the summer between my sophomore and junior years."

More hip issues. And more time on the shelf.

Estelle was healthy Tuesday, though, and won a pair of events at the Mississippi Valley Conference girls' indoor track meet at the UNI-Dome. She captured the 60-meter hurdles (9.10 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (27.26).

"It just feels good to be out there and running without limits," said Estelle, now 5-foot-10 and strong-bodied. "It's tough for me (to run) inside, because it takes me a little while to get going. I'm almost always one of the last ones over the first hurdle."

Team scores were not kept Tuesday, but the best team was Iowa City West (which won five events).

West's McKennan Cronbaugh was a triple-winner, claiming the long jump (17 feet, 4 1/4 inches), the 60 (7.35 seconds) and anchoring the Women of Troy from behind in the 400-meter relay (51.44).

Cedar Rapids Jefferson led the Metro charge, winning three events -- all relays.

Taylor Jacobson, Maddy Kanschaul, Abby Kanschaul and Sam Kitterman claimed the shuttle hurdle relay in 37.87 seconds while Maliya Ratliffe, Jasmine Blue, Lucy Schneekloth and Rachel Broghammer won the 800-meter relay in 1:47.37.

Jacobson, Blue, Meredith Koenigsfeld and Broghammer topped the 1,600-meter relay in 4:15.04.

"That's a really good start for us," Broghammer said. "All the girls have such a better base than we did last year."

And the J-Hawks have some promising youth to go with their veterans. The last two runners in the shuttle are freshmen. So are Blue and Koenigsfeld.

"We knew they were quick," said Jacobson, who will run here next year for UNI. "And we've really been focusing on our technique."

Linn-Mar's Maddie Saville captured the 400-meter dash in 1:04.66, and anchored the Lions' victorious sprint medley relay.

Leslie Harder of Cedar Rapids Prairie won the high jump, clearing 5 feet. West's Molly Leveille won the 800 (2:23.80), and the Women of Troy claimed the distance medley relay.
