Girls Basketball: Preston Beats Springville
By Jeff Linder, Reporter
MOUNT VERNON, Iowa — A cold start (OK, a very cold start) didn’t stop Cassie Aldis.
Aldis scored 10 of her game-high 15 points in the fourth quarter, including the tying basket with 25 seconds left in regulation, and Preston edged Springville 39-37 in overtime in a non-conference girls’ basketball game Saturday afternoon at the Small Multi-Sports Center on the Cornell College campus.
This after a 1-for-14 shooting display in the first three quarters.
Preston (8-2) overcame a scoreless stretch of 5:43 at the end of the first half. Down 18-13 at halftime, the Trojans rallied in the fourth quarter behind Aldis. She hit back-to-back 3-pointers to give Preston a 33-31 edge.
Springville (4-6) countered with baskets by Megan Wagaman and Madison Wittenburg for a 35-33 lead, then Aldis scored to tie it.
Ryleigh Keeney’s baseline shot with 1:35 remaining in overtime broke a 37-all tie, and neither team scored again. Wittenburg missed a 3-pointer in the final seconds.
Keeney added 11 points for the Trojans.
Wittenburg posted 11 points and eight rebounds for the Orioles.
