Longtime High School Coach Gary Stamp Dies at 65

LISBON, Iowa – Gary Stamp was granted another season to coach. Another vacation. More miles to run. "Life’s a journey, and softball’s a journey,” Stamp said in July after his softball team from Mount Vernon High School lost to Solon in a Class 3A regional final.

Down 3 Match Points, Solon Finds an Escape Route

MARION — West Delaware couldn’t finish, and Solon wouldn’t quit. Facing three match points and almost certain defeat, the Lady Spartans instead wrote another chapter in an extraordinary season Thursday night. Class 3A second-ranked Solon outlasted No. 4 West Delaware, 18-25, 26-24, 15-11, to win the Wamac Conference tournament championship at Marion High School. “We just kept fighting,” said Solon’s Kelsey Cave. “We didn’t give up. We have that backbone to come back. We really don’t like losing.” They don’t do it often. The Lady Spartans established a school record for wins in a season, improving to 29-1.

Survey: 4A Majority Favors Consideration of District Football

District football for Class 4A football teams is now a distinct possibility, if not a likelihood. Todd Tharp, assistant director of the Iowa High School Athletic Association, said Thursday that 4A schools voted 25-22 to “explore possible options” in changing the way playoff teams are determined. “It’s just a survey,” Tharp said. “I know a lot of people feel that (district football) is a done deal and that it’s being pushed down people’s throats. That’s not necessarily the case.”
