VAN HORNE, Iowa — Second-ranked Benton Community lived up to their lofty billing Friday night with a 70-38 win over No. 11 Marion behind a dominating performance from junior guard Madison Weekly. Weekly tossed in a school single-game record 34 points in leading the Bobcats to an 11-0 mark.

The early going was tight. Benton led just 23-17 before the Bobcats’ full court press pushed them to a 36-27 halftime advantage.

“We were concerned in the first half, as Marion made some adjustments on offense. We challenged our team to pick up the intensity on defense, and rebounding, both on offense and defense. I thought we did very well with that in the second half,” said Benton Coach Laurie Donald.

The second half belonged to Benton Community, as they outscored the Indians 34-11.

“We made some defensive adjustments, where we would switch up from man to man into a zone. It worked well for us in the second half,” said Donald.

Indian Coach Brian O’Donnell said the defensive effort, or lack thereof, hurt his squad.

“Tonight I thought we tried to win this game on offense, and not defense. That’s not Marion Indian basketball. Benton Community is an outstanding team, and played very well tonight. We just needed to play better and more intense on the defensive end.”

Bobcats Coach Donald was also very pleased with the play of Weekly, her outstanding guard.

“She is very much a leader for us, and does so many things well. If it is possible to have a quiet 34 points, she did it tonight. She is the type of player who picks up the team and carries it on her back. Her teammates respond well to her, as they were all excited that she set the school record tonight.”

Marion will be back in action Saturday, as they host Dubuque Wahlert. Benton will travel to Independence on Tuesday night.
